When the JBLM 2013 race season kicks off next month, runners will notice it's not the same as years past. The year opens with the well-known St. Patty's Day 10K/5K run March 16 but following the race are new additions.

Gone is the Triple Threat Triathlon. In its place is the Deuces Wild Triathlon two-race series at Shoreline Park and a 12K/5K Salmon Run at McChord Field.

The Salmon Run takes the place of what was formerly the first of the Triple Threat Triathlon events June 15. The race course follows the perimeter of McChord Field's airfield. Participants won't miss out on the food; they will also have an opportunity to purchase tickets for a post-race salmon bake.

"I'm kind of new to Washington and I really like it here a lot," JBLM Intramural Sports Programmer Tara Ricci said. "We don't really have any events that tie into the culture of the area." The summer months bring the popular Down and Dirty 5K Mud Runs June 29 and Aug. 3, starting from behind Soldiers Field House. The first Deuces Wild Triathlon is July 20. The first of the two-part triathlon series is a sprint triathlon, which follows the same course as the Triple Threat: a half-mile swim around American Lake, a 15-mile bike ride and a three-mile run through Lewis North. The second race in the series is an Olympic distance triathlon, which is about double the length of the sprint course.

"The Olympic distance is more in demand in the local community," said Kathy Salcedo, JBLM intramural sports coordinator.

The rest of the calendar remains the same as previous years: Sept. 14, the JBLM Half-Marathon; Nov. 16, the Turkey Trot 10K/5K and Dec. 7, Santa's Reindeer Dash 10K/5K.

The St. Patty's Day run has one major change in its new afternoon start time.

The race is usually a morning run like all other races, but this year the race will start at 2 p.m. at the MWR tent on Lewis Main to coincide with the St. Patty's Day festivities including Irish music and dancers, beer and bangers and mash.

"It's a community-wide event," Salcedo said.

The race will have its usual awards and door prizes, and the festival will also feature its own set of door prizes. On the JBLM intramural sports calendar the cross-country series behind Soldiers Field House begins April 10 with races April 17 and 24.
