Keeping up with JBLM construction: Projects ending, new ones beginning

If you've ever been on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, you're probably aware that construction seems to be a never-ending process. From facility renovations to new construction to road repair, there always seems to be a project in the works. However, many current projects are soon slated to end - and every orange cone represents an enhancement for those who work and live on JBLM.

Some construction projects are intended to increase driver safety and benefit on-base traffic flow, including the following:

  • A stoplight will be installed at the corner of Hwy 507 and East Gate Road, with completion anticipated by April 27
  • The roundabout at the back gate off of JBLM North (off of Gravelly Lake Drive) will reopen on May 1
  • A roundabout will be built at the junction of Murray Road and 150th Street, near the Logistics Gate (exit 123 off I-5). The work is set to begin in mid-April and conclude in August; as a result, the Logistics Gate will be closed for a short period of time

Many of the on-base fitness centers have also been under construction recently, but there is light at the end of tunnel for these, not to mention the opening of a new recreation destination.

  • The new Skate Park on JBLM Main is set for completion this month.
  • Jensen Gym on JBLM Main will reopen in early May
  • Renovations of the locker rooms in Wilson Gym on JBLM North will be completed April 1
  • The McChord Fitness Center renovations should be complete by July 26
  • Kimbro pool (located inside of McVeigh Gym, JBLM Main) renovations will be completed by Nov. 5

Just in time for summer break, a few of the JBLM's Child Development Centers will also reopen or open their doors:

  • Madigan CDC will reopen this summer.
  • The Hillside Youth Center will open in early June.

On the larger project side, the Pendleton Avenue Project will kick off in March, resulting in sporadic closures along 2nd Division Drive. The many-pronged road work plan, which will not be complete until summer 2013, is intended to result in major improvements in traffic flow, improve parking and facility access and create an attractive bike and pedestrian-friendly environment.

According to JBLM's Department of Public Works, sidewalks will continue to be created around base over the next 10 years, starting with work along Pendleton Avenue.
