Drum roll please ... and the 2009 Grover Loening Award for best Air Force Reserve flying squadron goes to the 728th Airlift Squadron.

"The 728th AS has set the standard for its people to achieve its full potential and accomplish the mission," said Lt. Col. William Flanigan, 446th Airlift Wing commander. "They have excelled in every endeavor."

The Air Force Reserve Command recognized the 728th AS, for its accomplishments, including more than 6,900 flying hours last year alone. With half of their missions in combat, reservists from the 728th AS gave vital support to theater commanders and allies while providing crucial humanitarian support through missions such as Operation Deep Freeze.

"We have people in every section here that have received command level or Air Force-level awards," said Lt. Col. Colin Carr, 728th AS commander. "This squadron is full of amazing people and its been reflected in the recognition they've received," he said.

For example, the 728th AS transported U.S. Navy divers and mine-detecting dolphins, helping to clear WWII mines from New Caledonian waters. Missions like these are all part of a day's work for the 728th AS experts in airlift.

The Grover Loening Award is given to recognize outstanding performance of Air Force, Air Mobility Command and Air Force Reserve missions. The award was first given in 1964 and honors the late Grover Loening, a noted aviation pioneer and first civilian member of the National Air and Space Museum's Advisory Board.
