The behemoth cranes that grace our skyline are found in the Port of Tacoma. This area is largely comprised of gritty industrial warehouse sites with Mack trucks whizzing by. Naturally, in the heart of it all is the port itself. Cargo containers and large cranes mark the presence of one of the largest cargo ports in all of North America. The Port of Tacoma is a significant and iconic part of the "gritty" roots that our community culture embraces. Here are a few sites to see in the area:

(Seafoods and Sips)

Casual dining with an awe-inspiring view can be found at Johnny's Dock Restaurant and Marina. There's ample parking for landlubbers and seamen alike. The menu is full of Northwest favorites, in other words, lots of entrées and appetizers featuring flavors from the ocean. And with views of the Foss Waterway, Museum of Glass and twinkles of downtown, Johnny's is a diamond in the rough. 1900 E. D St., Tacoma, 253.627.3186

(Wetland Walks)

Gog-le-hi-te Wetlands is a lovely stroll with a thriving ecosystem just a hop from busy winding roads. A dirt path leads to a viewing platform where folks can soak in some wildlife in its natural habitat, from furry friends to little fishies. It's a little kiss of nature, and who would have known it once served as a landfill for the city? Open 30 minutes pre-sunrise and post-sunset. 1402 Lincoln Ave., Tacoma

(Green Thumb Gurus)

Let's face it, the Washington climate isn't so friendly to our green-leafed friends for a good portion of the year. For those who are looking for variety, a green house is necessary to avoid frostbitten plants and produce.  For those not looking for anything incredibly fancy, Solar Gem Green Houses provides reasonable greenhouse options. No foundation is needed, and its greenhouses are portable and keep those green thumbs busy all year. 1904 Stewart St., Tacoma, 253.383.3055

(Fellas Who Fix It)

This one is for the handymen and fixer uppers. Tacoma Screw is a locally-owned entity whose inventory has all of your honey-do list needs. Yes, as the name indicates, that includes screws and lots of other tools. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to finding the proper materials for just about any project. Open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 2222 Port of Tacoma Road, Tacoma, 253.383.4435
