The town of Fircrest boasts a scenic, park-like tranquility and quaint charm. If you were to drive among its tidy residential streets, you would never guess that it maintains such a close proximity to University Place, Tacoma and Lakewood. Even traveling through the heart of its "downtown," you're met with lovely locally owned shops, eateries and serenity. Be forewarned, though, the local authorities are very serious about the town's 25-mph speed limit, which is maintained through all of the city limits. So slow down, relax and soak it all in.

Here are a few spots worth spelunking:

[Recreation Formation]

Fircrest Park is impressive in size for such a small town. This large grassy Eden plays home to three baseball diamonds, tennis courts and a big toy play space for the wees. With loads of well-kept lawn space, park benches and picnic tables, it's a delightful spot to bring your lunch. And its neighbors not only include quiet secluded homes surrounding the park, but also the Roy H. Murphy Community Center and outdoor swimming pool. If there's a public event in Fircrest, this is likely where the masses are communing. Open from dawn until dusk. 555 Contra Costa, Fircrest, 253.564.8177

[Golf Gurus]

Another extraordinary span of grass galore in the Fircrest community is the Fircrest Golf Club. Though this 18-hole course is not open to the public, it is worthy of looking into if you're looking to join a country club that boasts modern-day amenities and a full-service staff. 1500 Regents Blvd., Fircrest, 253.564.6756, fircrestgolf.com

T.W.O Coffee is a fairly new addition to the Fircrest community residing in what was once a coffeehouse by a different name. The outdoor patio is just one aspect of improvement, and though the establishment it once was was lovely, T.W.O has concocted an even warmer and welcoming atmosphere for your coffee and tea sipping desires. It's cozy, bookish and shabby chic. Though technically a part of a strip mall, the parking lot is serene by most standards, so the outdoor seating is a lovely touch. Open Mondays to Fridays, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1039 Regents Blvd., Fircrest, 253.564.7336

[Mama Mia!]

Viafore's Italian Delicatessen is old-school Italian at its finest. This family owned establishment boasts flavorful authentic deli sandwiches in house and a selection of premade cannoli, cold cuts, cheeses, pastas and sauces for whipping up a little something at home. Bring cash as it does not accept plastic. Like I said, old school. Open Tuesdays to Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 604 Regents Blvd., Fircrest, 253.564.2228

[Caged Tots]

The Gene Goodwin Memorial TOT LOT is an enclosed playground with this in mind. No fear of traffic, or monstrous kids bulldozing your little nugget over, with a sandbox, two big toys and loads of other toy treasures like trucks, shovels and more, this park is meant for the toddler set.  Sit back and enjoy the playground a bit.
