It's like a trip through the wardrobe to Narnia

Sandwiched between the hustle and bustle of Lakewood and University Place, the town of Steilacoom serves as a little waterfront retreat of sorts. The transition from stop and go traffic on either side, down the winding, wooded road is like a trip through the wardrobe to Narnia. As the greenery subsides, you are welcomed by several parks, small shops, museums and eateries and an idyllic residential community with a glorious view.

Not so long ago, Steilacoom celebrated the 150th anniversary of its incorporation as the first town in Washington. This pride of the town's past shines, with several little museums to share the wealth of knowledge that any history buff or curious kid may want to inquire about. Steilacoom is a relaxing getaway without getting too far from home; many even opt to bike their way around the scenic town. ‘Tis the season for a Farmer's Market, and beginning this week you can visit every Wednesday through Aug. 28 from 3-7 pm.

Here are just a few attractions you'll find:

[Steaks, Seafood and Sips]

The Topside Bar and Grill has one of the most memorable decks in Pierce County. The seats are well equipped with umbrellas, and the view is divine. With this in mind, be prepared during the summer months to wait for an outdoor seat during peak hours. The menu features a selection of meaty sandwiches, juicy steaks and delectable seafood dishes alongside an impressive craft beer list that really sweetens the deal.  On my prior visits, service has always been prompt and friendly. 215 Wilkes St., Steilacoom. Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday

[History Hounds]

Steilacoom, though a cozy little town, is teeming with historical landmarks. The Wagon Shop is just one of them. Though the Wagon Shop has been reconstructed since its original inception, it remains FULL of artifacts from the days of yore (circa early 1900s). You'll find wood working tools, a cart and buggy, an old phone and farming tools. It's a neat little stop for a field trip. Open Saturdays and Sundays 1-5 pm; hours vary during the season though, and private tours are available. 253.584.4133.

[Park Play]

There is no shortage of parks throughout Steilacoom, but Sunnyside Beach is the largest and has a little something for everyone. Most notable is that it is an actual sand beach - you can take off your shoes and stroll along the water without fear of jagged barnacled rocks underfoot. You can use one of the outdoor barbecues to cook something up and sit in grassy shaded areas or at one of the many picnic tables or benches. There's even a children's big toy for the tots, and you will even find two beach volleyball courts, sand and all.

[Wetland Bird Watching]

Entering from Chambers and Beech Street, you'll find 64 vast acres of forested marshy walking trails, log bridges and several viewing points ideal for spotting local wildlife. If you like the feeling of outdoorsy detachment but don't have a weekend to commit, Farrell's Marsh and Wildlife Area is lovely. Open daily dawn until dusk.

[Spirits to Sip]

As you stroll or bike your way through your Steilacoom adventure, consider stopping by Port Steilacoom Distillery. Crafted spirits made on site are available for sample and sale. Your taste buds are in for a treat with Port Steilacoom's vodka and gin, made from local honey and cane sugar. On site you may even run across a neighborhood kitty named Martini who almost serves as a mascot. 1601 Lafayette St., Steilacoom. Open 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday.
