St. Vincent De Paul of Tacoma-Pierce County is a non-profit, Catholic lay, serving the community since 1926. While they're an organization rooted in Catholicism, they welcome everyone regardless of race, religion or orientation. Many people know them for their thrift stores, and while those stores are an important element in helping the community, their mission is much broader:

The charity helps people with basic needs such as rent and utilities by providing direct financial assistance that help families and seniors stay in their home and prevent homelessness.

Tracy Peacock, Executive Director of St. Vincent De Paul spoke about calls to their help line from people who have received an eviction notice. The fact that they're able to respond with "we will absolutely help you" is what it's all about. This past July alone they were able to give out $18,000 in hotel vouchers to those in need.

Beyond their fight to help people with basic needs and to stay in their homes, they also hire people to work in their thrift stores, many of whom are re-entering the workforce following a personal crisis. The donations and proceeds from their stores in both Puyallup and Tacoma go directly to helping their neighbors in need.

Peacock, whose husband is a CW4 in 1st Special Forces Group at Joint Base Lewis McChord, also spoke about the importance of supporting their military neighbors in need. At both their store locations they always have a 10% military discount.

During these unprecedented times 2020 has brought, St. Vincent De Paul has adapted their safety protocols in order to still accept donations at their stores. They're also still actively looking for and accepting volunteers at their locations.

Monetary donations help drive the mission and go directly into supporting the community. They can be made at  https://svdptacoma.org/donations/.  Between monetary and store donations St. Vincent De Paul was able to donate more than $580,000 in direct financial assistance to more than 17,700 people in the community in 2019.

St. Vincent De Paul of Tacoma- Pierce County's donation number is 33329.
