In 1990, through input from Pauline Trost, wife of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Carlisle Trost, Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher became aware of the need for safe, comfortable places for families to stay while they visited and waited for their loved ones undergoing treatment at military medical facilities across the country. During the past 24 years, more than 60 Fisher Houses have been completed on or near military installations from coast to coast. These houses have served the needs of more than 220,000 families.

Built in 1992, the Fisher House on Joint Base Lewis-McChord was among the first home to be completed. Located on base at 9999 Wilson Ave., Fisher House provides "‘a home away from home' that enables family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time - during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury at Madigan Army Medical Center."

Since it opened, JBLM's Fisher House has provided that "home away from home" to thousands of families, free of charge. Each one of those families has had their own story, and many of those stories have been shared in the pages of the Fisher House journals. Now, an assortment of those stories has been collected into a single, beautiful volume entitled, Stories From Fisher House.

Among the entries featured in the book is the story of how a special event made the unbearable bearable for Sierra C. and her daughter Alexis. You'll also meet Andrew and his wife Carmen and hear about how Fisher House was there for them when their twins were born eight weeks prematurely. Many of the stories have happy endings, a few less so, but every one of them will make you appreciate the invaluable work that Fisher House has done and continues to do.

Stories From Fisher House, which ranges in cost from $28.99 for paperback to $138.49 for the heirloom quality premium lay-flat hardcover edition, is an emotional compilation of images of handwritten pages from journals describing the journeys of some of the many families who have been blessed by JBLM's Fisher House. The book would make a lovely gift or a beautiful remembrance for those who have stayed at Fisher House and their loved ones.
