Asian and Jamaican to your door

Three restaurants offer up something other than pizza on JBLM

Kokos is one of three restaurants delivering something other than pizza to homes on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Who doesn't love pizza? But, as a go-to week after week, even this favorite dining pastime gets old. So who does a JBLM-ite turn to when getting in the car and getting it yourself won't work? Three area restaurants deliver to the base.

How fortunate

The Fortune Cookie in downtown DuPont will bring you Chinese and other Asian delights with just a phone call, free of charge, Monday through Saturday from 1-9 p.m.

Maybe not the best Chinese food in town, it is good enough compared to getting off the couch and making it yourself. Fortune Cookie delivers decent America-Chinese food with healthy portions and fair prices - many items are $6.95. They go light on the fillers and thickeners, focusing more on quality ingredients and a wide selection.

Top recommendations at Fortune Cookie are the Mongolian Beef, Pad Thai and the Chicken Fried Rice.

To view the entire menu and arrange an order, click fortunecookiedupont.com. To visit, they are open 11-9 p.m. at 1575 Wilmington Dr., Suite 160, or call 253.964.9357.

Side Note: Want the best Chinese food in the area? Discover Tacoma Schezuan in Lakewood. It is not American-Chinese, but rather what the Chinese people eat. The Hot Pot is amazing!

Cuckoo for Koko

Down the street from Fortune Cookie is Koko, another Asian restaurant but more Japanese than Chinese. They have a wide array of teriyaki dishes, but the hot and spicy chicken ramen is the number one recommendation. There is plenty of meat and noodles to satisfy the ramen lover, and the spice is perfectly balanced in the broth.

Other standouts include a generous amount of chicken fried rice, flavorful yakisoba and daily lunch specials that can't be beat. Again, not the best Asian food in the South Sound, but as far as teriyaki houses go, it beats hauling the kids in the car and driving someplace else.

Koko is also closed on Sundays, with delivery available 3-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1-9 p.m. on Saturdays. They are located at 1520 Wilmington Dr., Suite 160, are open at 11 a.m., and accessible by phone at 253.964.5656, or click kokoteriyaki.com.

Jamaican Mon

Saving the best for last, look no further than Lakewood and the Green Coconut Tree.  This relatively new restaurant also has Asian specialties, but the true champion of the locale is the Jamaican and Creole food they create in their kitchen.

This international restaurant brings a dimension to area dining no one else offers - including a goat curry that is both mild on the goat but flavorful in the sauce.

The curried goat is drenched in a yellow curry with green onions and spices - moist and rich, just watch out for the tiny goat bones littered throughout.

Other standouts include Cajun chicken, fried bananas, frog legs and more.

The Green Coconut Tree is at 8813 Edgewater Dr. SW #102, Lakewood, WA 98499. 253.473.4444. Delivery hours to JBLM are during open hours until 7:30 p.m. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. To see the menus, click http://greencoconuttree.com.
