Military families in the Joint Base Lewis-McChord area who elect to fill their prescriptions off post have a new option when it comes to choosing a pharmacy. And with Walgreens possibly no longer accepting TRICARE beginning Jan. 1, those families need to find a place quickly.

They needn't look far.

DuPont HealthMart (1545 Wilmington Drive, suite 160, DuPont), which opened last month, accepts TRICARE along with a range of other insurance plans including Uniform Medical, Aetna, Caremark, Primera, Regence and more.

The shop is owned by Jim Perrou, RPh., a former Sailor who served as a gunner on the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln.   After 10 years in the Navy, Perrou went back to school, graduating as a registered pharmacist from Purdue University in 2000. The Indiana native now lives in Olympia, and spent the last decade working for and managing other pharmacies in the area before opening DuPont HealthMart in November.

A full-service pharmacy with a variety of prescription products and over-the-counter medicines, DuPont HealthMart offers an intimate, small-town feel and provides "personal attention you won't get at a chain," Perrou said. "It's a great location," he added. "We really like it here."

It also offers convenience and short wait times that are hard to find at military treatment facilities or "big box" pharmacies. For instance, customers can be notified via e-mail or text message when their prescription is ready, and can easily refill their prescriptions online.

For TRICARE customers, there is a $5 co-pay for a 30-day supply of generic medicines. Either bring in a handwritten prescription or have the doctor call or fax it in to the shop.

Hours are currently Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but Perrou is looking to expand after the holidays. For more information visit www.dupontpharmacy.com or call 253-964.3400.
