Heroes’ Health & Wellness clinic specializes in serving those in uniform

More than five years ago, Lakewood native Trista Peterson was pursuing a career in law enforcement and suddenly realized it wasn't what she wanted to do. Instead, she became a licensed massage practitioner and opened up her own office - Heroes' Health & Wellness Massage Therapy - targeted at what she believes to be an underserved and stressed population.

"I have always had ties to the military," Peterson explained, adding that both of her grandfathers served, as well as her stepfather, and that many of her cousins are presently on active duty. "I like the idea of supporting those groups of people who put others first, which means not only the military, but also first responders, fire department personnel and members of the law enforcement community."

To ensure that these community members receive her support, Heroes' Health & Wellness offers a discount of more than 15 percent off of her already affordable rates, so a one-hour massage costs just $55. The result is that the majority of Peterson's clientele is military, including those on active duty, as well as spouses and retirees.

With an office adjacent to North Harbor Physical Therapy, which caters to a large military population since it accepts TRICARE and receives referrals through TriWest when the Madigan physical therapy clinic is booked, Peterson's work encompasses not only relaxation and deep tissue massage, but also medical massage, which focuses more on injuries or chronic pain.

Peterson also offers prepaid packages for multiple services (for example, military can purchase a package of 3 one-hour massages for $150) and gift certificates.

"I don't push a set schedule on anyone," she said. "People should come when they can and when they can afford (it)." She does have a few standing appointments with regular clients, because "sometimes, at first, it does help to come more frequently, but each person is different. This isn't prescribed; it is more about personal preference."

Hours of operation at Heroes' Health & Wellness Massage Therapy (8509 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, in Suite D) are Mondays to Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Peterson can typically accommodate clients' scheduling requests within a few days.
