There is a similarity between the game of football and the Army.

Both are based on disciplined teamwork.

During the 2009 high school football season, the United States Army and the Seattle Seahawks have been honoring Washington state student-athletes on a weekly basis who exemplify the values of academic and athletic achievements.

Willis Wilson, a Lakes High School running back and cornerback, was selected as the Seahawks/U.S. Army player of the week.

Honored Sept. 29 for his achievement, Wilson received two tickets to the Seahawks-Chicago Bears game, a $250 donation to Lakes High School in his name, two pre-game sideline passes, a jersey, a football, and recognition on the Seahawks Web site.

“It is a great honor to have been selected,” commented Wilson.

The Army prides itself on loyalty, duty, respect, self-service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.

To be considered for the award, student-athletes must exhibit these values.

A self-described creative young man, Wilson has a 3.0 grade point average and is a natural leader on the gridiron.

“He is a great team player, a hard worker, and a good student,” commented head coach Dave Miller.

His leadership abilities were showcased recently in a game against White River when he ran for 158 yards and scored four touchdowns.

His near future plans are to attend college with an eye toward becoming a physical education teacher or a physical therapist.

As he laced up his shoes in preparation for practice, he turned and said, “No matter what you do, work hard.”

Sounds like someone who personifies the spirit of the Seahawks/U.S. Army Player of the Week.
