The Christmas holiday is over, and the budget is tighter this month, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun. Although winter sports equipment can be quite expensive at the local resorts, there are some local on-post facilities that are offering good deals on rentals and trips.

To rent equipment, check out the Northwest Adventure Center (www.fortlewismwr.com/adventureprograms.html) located on Fort Lewis, which offers discount prices on all winter equipment. Skis, poles and boots can be rented for $22 a day, snowboards and boots for $34 a day and snowshoes are $12 a day. By comparison, Crystal Mountain Ski Resort costs per day are as follows: snowshoes, $20; ski or snowboard, $30; or skis or snowboard package with poles and boots, $35.

Adventures Unlimited (www.mcchordafb.us/adv_tours.html) offers these inexpensive winter sports trips for military families and Department of Defense employees.
