Eighty-two years ago, America's short-lived flirtation with a ban on alcohol came to an end. With no Prohibition, gone was the thrill of secret passwords, false storefronts and a bit of lawlessness. But in the last year, Olympia has enjoyed a harkening back to those days of excess - Dillingers Cocktails and Kitchen. Not only was the building constructed in 1926, but also the space Dillingers now occupies used to be a bank. There is an actual vault inside the establishment, and the metal door, decorative in design, is swung open at all times to invite visitors into the historic room to dine and imbibe. The bar looks as if it came straight from the '20s, with a graceful, high-arched mirrored shelving system to hold small-batch bottles of booze. The bar itself is made with wood from the original walls. For your own taste of Jazz Age Prohibition era, vocalist Greta Jane and guitarist Vince Brown will perform music of the gin joints and back-alley speakeasies. Bonus: Dillingers was voted Best Restaurant in the Weekly Volcano's Best of Olympia issue, with the joint's bartender Sherilyn Lightner grabbing Best Bartender honors.
