"So she spit in her own face." "Looks like slutty is the new black." "You wanna see her belly-dance?" Forget wishing you were a fly on the wall: the beauty of eavesdropping is that you get to be a barfly at the bar, picking up snippets of conversation that you can later weave into the most delightfully surreal of narrative quilts. (Why do you think so many writers become alcoholics? It's for art's sake, man.) Of course, you have to visit a variety of venues to capture the gamut of voices. Or do you? Enter The Drunken Telegraph, an event that brings people together to share stories that build community - or at least make for a damn fine evening. Similar to Tacoma's famous Distinguished Writers night, there will be feature storytellers followed by an open mic for those who sign up to tell their 5-minute story on the night's theme. The Drunken Telegraph #5 goes down Sept. 21 centered around the theme "Neighbors." Come hear stories, or share you own, about those who didn't live near Mr. Rogers.

THE DRUNKEN TELEGRAPH #5 - NEIGHBORS, 7 p.m., Masa, 2811 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, $5 at brownpapertickets, 253tad@gmail.com
