When you're done with Music and Art in Wright Park this weekend, head over to the ballroom above New Frontier for the 5th Annual Bike Jump by Gaytron the Imploder, a benefit for Hilltop's independent bike co-op Second Cycle.

Come watch as Gaytron (Galen McCarty Turner) pumps his 24-inch BMX cruiser up a ramp and bursts through 90,000 volts of rare stimulated gasses - in layman's terms, a bunch of pretty neon tubes.

"It's energetic, busy and fun," said Noah Struthers, director of Second Cycle. "There is a lot of anticipation for the big boom; it's festive - people start chanting."

This year, the event is being held at the Ballroom above New Frontier rather than its usual alley spot. The ballroom is an old union hall and features a huge wood floor, 20-foot ceilings and large windows.

"It has a lot of character," said Struthers, who also creates posters for the event.

The atmosphere will be boosted by live music with heavy-hitters Lozen and Death Raid. DJ Melodica and Naj ‘n' Del will keep up the tunes. Suggested donation is $5. Silk screen posters, T-shirts and Second Cycle merchandise will be for sale.

Why benefit Second Cycle?

"We proved access to sustainable transportation," said Struthers, "It's a basic need."

Safety glasses will be handed out, and Gaytron will be clad in a full Carhart protective suit.

"Show up, have a good time and witness one of the more strange events in Tacoma," Struthers said.

Ballroom above New Frontier, Saturday, Aug. 10, 8 p.m., 301 E. 25th St. Tacoma.
