Let us praise the Dockyard Derby Dames roller derby girls. They built a nice thing for themselves since first organizing in 2005, and they did it through hard, grass-roots work. Since then, the roller girls have been ubiquitous, constantly fundraising, contesting bouts, double-fisting beers in some South Sound bar while trying to recruit your sister or girlfriend to their cause. They zipped into the local zeitgeist on polyurethane wheels and pack every bout. To the uninitiated, the league is awesome fun viewing complete with silly derby names and fishnet stockings. Digging (and elbowing) deeper, the Dockyard Derby Dames are changing the way that people look at women - combining smart, funny and creativeness with physically aggression. OK, they're damn sexy too.

Saturday, the league's season 7 continues with the Marauding Mollys the Femme Fianna and the Hellbound Homewreckers taking on The Trampires in the third bout of the season. The league's new trackside seating section by the team benches adds excitement, as does the VIP seating embedded in the beer garden with trackside viewing and a direct sightline to start line maneuvers. A portion of the proceeds from this bout will go toward Carol's Cause to help fight ovarian cancer. Our favorite part at Dockyard Derby Dames' bouts? The freak show mascots.

DOCKYARD DERBY DAMES, 6 p.m., Saturday, May 4, Pierce College Health Education Center, 9401 Farwest Dr. SW., Lakewood, $12 at brownpapertickets or $15 door, slightly more for trackside and VIP seats, www.dockyardderbydames.com
