Friday night's Master of the Double Bass show doesn't involve a long-haired drummer with a double kick drum pedal - but rather a celebration of the upright bass, one of the most physically imposing and viscerally stirring acoustic instruments ever made, with Edgar Meyer behind it. Sleeves rolled up and ready to go, Meyer is a musical chameleon who is equally at home supplying the bass line for Schubert's "Trout" Quintet, working as a studio musician for Emmylou Harris and Garth Brooks, and playing the demanding solo part in his own concerto for double bass and orchestra. Edgar Meyer is hailed by The New Yorker as "the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument (the double bass)." The Tacoma Philharmonic hosts the three-time Grammy winner Friday at the Pantages.
