Tuesday, Feb. 28: Wycliffe Gordon

Schneebeck Concert Hall

By Volcano Staff on February 21, 2012

If the pictures on the Internet are any indication, trombonist extraordinaire Wycliffe Gordon likes big shirt collars. And he wears them well, with abundant swagger. The good news is Gordon's music allows him to pull it off; it's top-notch in just about every category that matters. That's the thing about a big shirt collar - you've gotta be able to carry it.

Gordon can.

The University of Puget Sound website describes Gordon as a "musical ambassador, master trombone player, and vocalist," who heads to the school Tuesday for a performance with the school's Jazz Band in celebration of Black History Month. A former collaborator with Wynton Marsalis and pianist Billy Taylor, The Jazz Journalists Association named Gordon Trombonist of the Year in 2011 - which has to be getting a little fucking boring for him, seeing as he's earned the title five times in the last decade.
