Lucas Bonnema loves to play and work with Legos.

"I started working with these when I was in junior high," he said as he stood in the middle of City Blocks' studio, located on the lower floor of Freighthouse Square.

Comprised of one-of-a-kind businesses and of a large number of ethnic restaurants, Freighthouse Square is located at 440 East 25^th Street in downtown Tacoma.

"I've never stopped building," added Bonnema.

City Blocks is the creation of Dan Parker, an engineer and a certified master Lego artist.  Along with other Lego enthusiasts, Parker has created meticulous creations made from tens of thousands of different colored Lego blocks.

"It took us three days - and a lot of caffeine - to build that chair," said Bonnema as he looked over the drawing that guided the efforts.

City Blocks is not a store; rather, it is a place for all levels of Lego artists to come for inspiration and free time to work with the blocks.

"Everyone has fun who walks in here," continued Bonnema.

At the front of the studio, there is a large table full of thousands of Lego blocks, and everyone is welcome to stop by and create art.

Some of the work the Lego artists create is used at corporate events and fundraisers as centerpieces.  When not busy making Lego art for pleasure or businesses, Parker and his fellow artists travel to summer camps and festivals to display their talents.

"We also host birthday parties here in the studio, or we will come to your home," continued Bonnema.

"We will show up with tubs of Lego blocks and play with the kids," he added.

City Blocks' studio is open Monday thru Friday from 10 to 4 and on Saturdays from 11 to 3.
