HAPPY HOUR: Street tacos with Heidi

El Toro Mexican Restaurant, Lakewood

BARTENDER HEIDI HINTZ: You don't see many empty stools when she's behind the bar.

Squeeze down the narrow dining room past and around the corner, and then run for a touchdown inside the massive bar. The sprawling lounge interior offers TVs for sports, plus two pool tables, ATM, a jukebox and country music when the juke idles. Blue-collar worker bees - some with the safety vests still on - and old Lakewood crowd the faux cantina façade to watch friendly bartender Heidi Hintz's every move. Hintz and the wait staff are quick to refill that empty mug when the suds run dry.

This favorite neighborhood hangout for working stiffs serves tasty appetizers priced between $1-$7, including bacon-wrapped prawns, super machos and $1 enchiladas, burritos and tacos.

Happy Hour: 3-6 p.m. daily, featuring $2.50 drafts, $3 wells and $4 margaritas. It's all about the food, though. It's an inexpensive dinner.

Recommended: The $4 street tacos satisfy with four corn tortillas topped steak, onion and cilantro.
