Jezebels Bar and Grill

An empty spot on my conscious

I hate that I have to review Jezebels for the Meat Market. Hate it. Let me explain:

One night, a couple of dude friends and I were drinking whiskey at neighboring McCoy's Tavern. After a few drinks (four or five), we decided we should devote the night to what all nights out involving booze and dude friends should be devoted to: dancing. We wanted to dance our stinking hearts out.

So the question arose, where should we go? Jakes? Too crowded. The Royal? Nah, man, I ain't paying no cover.

Then, like a siren's song, we noticed the rap music drifting in through the walls. Jezebels. Yes! We would spend the night dancing at the often-forgotten Jezebels.

And we did. I have vague memories of inexpensive beers, doing the robot in front of a mirrored DJ booth and a pair of bachelorette partygoers. What a night. Just thinking about it fills me with the warmth of four whiskeys.

Which gets me back to my point: I hate to review Jezebels. Because even though Jezebels once made for a great night out, I can't say it's a great club. The primary, if not only, reason Jezebels is not the best candidate for a stellar Meat Market review is because the club is rarely busy. Part of what made my fateful night out unforgettable was we had the place mostly to ourselves.

Tonight, it's more of the same. Hardly more than 20 patrons roam the spacious club. Three bros wearing New Era caps stand near the pool table. A small group of ladies and a few couples dance near DJ Donkeypunch Seahorse's stage. That's pretty much it. No one riding the mechanical bull, no line at the expansive bar, no sweaty crowd on the dance floor. Not exactly a clubber's dream; it's even worse if you're looking to hook up.

I don't know why Jezebels lacks a big scene. There's no cover, the DJ takes requests and the drinks are modestly priced. But for whatever reason, Olympians stay clear. Who knows, maybe one day others will hear the music too.
