Since this lounge opened in March 2009, proprietor Chris Keil and crew have entertained drinkers with discussions ranging from fermentation yeasts to ice density offering a vibe and drink menu that suggests a throwback to the pre-Prohibition era when tempting cocktails and stimulating conversation highlighted a cosmopolitan American nightlife. With ingredients such as housemade bitters, botanical infusions and herbs including yohimbe, damiana and tulsi gracing the stemware, it is safe to tag the folks behind the bar as apothecary rather than bartenders.
In January, 2001, Tacoma’s little hilltop apothecary gem impressed the New York Times Magazine food blog.
"The cocktails at 1022 South are so endlessly inventive and unparalleled in these parts that it's hard to pick one favorite. I will say that Under the Volcano burns real good, and it's not for the faint of heart," says Volcano scribe Rev. Adam McKinney.
