There are too many genres. Emo, screamo, twee pop and crunk. Who really knows what any of these classifications mean anymore? Bobble Tiki certainly doesn’t. Awash in brands, genres these days mean next to nothing.
Mustache rock, however, now there’s a musical classification Bobble Tiki can get behind — all prickly and coarse and full of pieces of lunch. Of course, he’s not entirely sure what “mustache rock” means, either — but he likes the sound of it.
The band that epitomizes mustache rock — in fact, the band that coined the term specifically for themselves — is We Wrote the Book on Connectors. The ultra quirky, ultra catchy, ultra pop-rocky foursome from Seattle will find their way to Bob’s Java Jive in Tacoma Friday, March 13. Despite the fact that We Wrote the Book on Connectors has made a career (using the term lightly) out of writing silly and inane songs about things like cake and gothic dance parties, there’s just something about this band that’s hard to resist.
Even though you know it’s just plain fun, and — abundant, childlike creativity aside — not much more, We Wrote the Book on Connectors is a sugar sweet band that makes you forget you’re supposed to be critical of such teeth rotting rock.
Because they’ve mastered it. It’s called mustache rock, and it seems Bobble Tiki is starting to get it.
“We make all our songs in our secret mustache laboratory at the bottom of the sea. Every piece of music we create is thoroughly tested by our mustache scientists for proper levels of mustache saturation,” explains guitarist and singer Mike Votava, who also says making mustache rock requires “lots and lots of magic.”
For those now hurting for a taste of the mustache rock, We Wrote the Book on Connectors released Ride it Out Like a Turbo Horse — a full length — in January, and also created a song writing service for anyone with an idea they’d like to see the band of the future put to music. So far, both endeavors have proven successful.
“The people who have heard (Ride it Out Like a Turbo Horse) really seem to like it, they are almost surprised by how good it is. It’s getting played regularly on KEXP, which is pretty cool. We tried to make an album that was a good representation of what we think we sound like live, I think we succeeded in that regard,” says Votava.
“A few months ago Pauly Shore visited me in a dream. He said ‘The world is in trouble. You must start the Official We Wrote the Book on Connectors Song Writing Service or things will get real bad real quick. The fate of the world depends on it, Buddddddddddy.’ So I started it up, saving the world in the process.”
Intrigued? Bobble Tiki thinks you should be. Bobble Tiki also knows that Matt Driscoll would forever hold it against him if he didn’t mention that, at least according to the band, We Wrote the Book on Connectors is officially endorsed by Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway.
“John Elway loves us. I can honestly say that John Elway is the sole reason why we are even a band,” explains Votava. “Of course he would have won more Super Bowls if we were around sooner. Studies have shown that there is a direct link between Super Bowl victories and mustache rock.”
Who knew?
We Wrote the Book on Connectors will play Bob’s Java Jive this Friday, March 13. Whether you refer to them as mustache rock, endorsed by Elway, or just one hell of a good time — We Wrote the Book on Connectors is a band well worth checking out.
