O’Malley’s Irish Pub hosts a karaoke contest.

I used to think that karaoke was simply a trend that would slowly disappear like ’80s air hair, but judging by the current flow of both obnoxious and melodic singers that take a stage each night in Tacoma, I really don’t think this trend is ever going to end.

Karaoke nights occur everywhere in Tacoma, including the West End, Engine House #9, Tempest, Puget Sound Pizza, the Flying Boots, and even Rockaroke at Jazzbones.

However, there’s a karaoke night in town that might get you much more than high fives from your bros after belting it out.

Each Tuesday at 9 p.m., 15 people are paying $3 and signing up to compete at O’Malley’s Irish Pub for their Karaoke Contest. After all 15 people perform, three winners are deemed worthy to advance to the semi-finals, and each contestant receives participation gifts.

This will roll on until the semi-finals where all of the qualifiers will convene at O’Malley’s on Sept. 9 and warm up those vocal chords enough to garner a $300 prize for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third.

May the very best karaoke killer win!

If you’d rather not compete, O’Malley’s also hosts a karaoke night on Wednesdays.

So, let’s say that karaoke isn’t exactly your style. In that instance, O’Malley’s has got you covered with $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon pink nights on Mondays from 8 p.m. to midnight, a Texas hold ’em freeroll tournament each Thursday at 8 p.m. and free pool all day on Sundays.

I’ve always been a fan of O’Malley’s, especially in their St. Patrick’s Day and Art on the Ave. throw-downs, but this establishment really seems to be stepping up its game lately.

In case you haven’t noticed, the front exterior of O’Malley’s received a fresh paint job that looks fantastic. O’Malley’s is also looking for a talented mural artist to paint the side of their building this summer to make Sixth Avenue history. If you or anyone you know is interested, you should e-mail omalleysirishpub@ comcast.net.

Lately I’ve been sinking my teeth into the great lineup of local bands that O’Malley’s brings in on the weekends. Most recently I caught the Bumma Stoge show there, and it was an absolute blast to rock out with that fun band and the great people who work for The Rock Wood-Fired Pizza (most of the Bumma Stoge band members work at The Rock).

Each and every night of the week, O’Malley’s has got ya covered, so if you’re a karaoke king or queen, a gambler, a pool shark, or one who simply loves ice-cold beer, strut into O’Malley’s now!
