The Jive music scene

Lately the local music scene has been weighing heavily on my mind, but not because it’s a bad thing.

I, for one, feel that for a city of this size (approximately 200,000) we’re fortunate to have a great scene with diverse styles and sounds.

S***, I just feel lucky that we have any music scene at all.

I’ve dropped so many local band names in this column before to give a shout-out to those that I adore, but today, my thoughts on this music is going to take a different form.

I want to love on the local venues that help get these fine musicians exposure because they’re such an important part of the quotient.

Sure, your brain will naturally go to places like Jazzbones, Hell’s Kitchen, and even the Swiss and Masa (Thursday nights!), but there’s a venue that’s been kickin’ for longer than the rest, and could use your love and support more than the others:

The World Famous Bob’s Java Jive.

Our very own Matt Driscoll gave the Jive some love earlier this month, but music is his forte.

When the Jive’s sweet music calendar manages to grab the attention of this busy socialite and nightlife correspondent, that’s when you KNOW it’s the Scene of the Crime.

All music aside, I think there’s quite a charming coincidence between why the coffee pot shaped building was constructed and the scene that we’re experiencing today.

If you didn’t know, the bizarre-o coffee pot shaped design that is the Jive was created near the beginning of the Great Depression in an attempt to stimulate businesses. Now that we’re in a down economy, I’m hopeful that the Jive’s infusion of sweet local music in this curiously wonderful building can have the same affect that it did way back then.

Since its construction, the Jive has been featured in all sorts of movies and celebrities large and small have partied in its quarters, but now this icon of a building is up to something that’s just as important (to me, at least): supporting local music.

Here’s a sneak peek of the shows coming up at the Jive that I really hope you’ll add to your very own busy social calendar, not just because these bands are cool, but also because the Jive deserves your love:

  • Saturday, May 17: Roy Loney and the Long Shots, The F***ing Eagles, The Tripwires, Darrren Selector

  • Wednesday, May 21: Paper Machete, Piko Panda

  • Friday, May 23: Waves and Radiation, Raylazer, Rising Tides, Tonasaur with Darrren Selector
