Emily Adler, Jessica Gavre, Aurora Jewell, and Kendra Varadi.

These are four important names to me.

Each of these women is beautiful, intelligent and unique.

And I won’t lie: I’m completely partial, because I’m friends with them, but the reason I’m writing about them is because if this hasn’t happened already, your life could benefit from knowing them.

What attracts me to them more than anything, and the reason they’re this week’s Scene of the Crime, is because the coordination between them creates a social force unlike the many that I’ve seen, especially from just four individuals, let alone all women.

May 6, 2007, these girls coordinated a fund-raiser for a cause that my socially-educated brain was unaware of: Obstetric Fistula (check out www.fistulafoundation.org/ for more info). Then, I had no idea who these gals were, but they quickly brought me inspiration and information about this epidemic that adversely affects and plagues women in developing countries during the birthing process and thereafter.

They brought together a sweet lineup of Tacoma bands at the Swiss with the goal of raising just $1,500 to fight Fistula. They surpassed their goal and instead raised more than $2,100. Now, I will follow the lead of anything these four organize because their determinism is highly contagious.

This year, my favorite T-Town social activists are back with a new cause: They’ve been watching the genocide occurring in Darfur, Sudan, and they’ve coordinated an event to do something about it.

Stand Up For Darfur will begin May 30 with a community discussion featuring guest speakers and a silent auction at King’s Books from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Then, May 31, local bands will do their own standing up for this cause at Doyle’s Public House at 2 p.m. for an event that you seriously won’t want to miss: Blanco Bronco, Stephanie Johnson, Matt Coughlin, Heidi Vladyka, Negative 7, John Walker and the Hitchhikers, Kate Tucker and Sons of Sweden, The Joshua Cain Band and the Sea Navy. Even if you’re not socially-minded, this lineup should be more than enough to get you off the couch.

Adler, Gavre, Jewell, and Varadi hope that Stand Up For Darfur will raise the community’s awareness about Darfur and $10,000 for the cause.

These ladies are also a perfect example of how the passion, conviction and dedication of four wonderful individuals, along with powerful community partnerships, can truly make a difference in our world.

Please join me and Stand Up For Darfur on May 30 and 31. For more information about the event visit www.myspace.com/savedarfurtacoma. For more information about the crisis, visit www.savedarfur.org.
