TV Tacoma

Loving Tacoma on a geeky level

By Natasha Gorbachev on December 13, 2007

I know that many of you consider me to be some kind of über bourgeoisie babe.

At the surface, that’s probably true.

But when you peel me down after several layers, you’ll discover some heartbreaking information:

I can be such a geek.

When I’m at home, I’m not kicking over martini glasses and shaking it on the dining room table.

In between the occasional private dance party, I’m actually quite lame. Please allow me to share some of these nerdy behaviors so that you’ll know what I’m talking about. One of my favorite things to do is watch TV Tacoma.

I looooove to track what’s going on with our city while developing an understanding of the personalities behind our policy makers and community leaders. That’s why you’ll find me tuning into shows like TV Tacoma’s “Business Matters,” “City Line,” “CityScape” and “Inside Tacoma.”

I’ll even take it a step further and let you know that I watch the Tacoma City Council meetings on that channel.

I’m blabbering about all of this for one particular reason.

Last weekend, while at my beloved Top of Tacoma bar (it’s mine because I live by it), I was overwhelmed with appreciation to see that outgoing at-large Tacoma City Councilmember Bill Evans and his honorable wife, Ann were there.

Outside of his Councilman duties, this family is quite well known for their cozy Pacific Northwest Shop that you should see to believe.

Why would I be so stoked that they were at the Top? Because I’ve watched enough TV Tacoma and read enough newspapers to know what that means.

Bill Evans is a supporter of so many efforts in Tacoma, and one that he’s quite passionate about is the revival of Tacoma’s Eastside. I’ve heard him talk about it, but to actually see him sitting at the bar, patronizing a fellow small business across town when he has everything he needs in Proctor, really meant a lot to me.

I had a chance to speak with them briefly, and from the bottom of my heart I thanked them for coming by. Councilmember Evans’ eyes lit up when he talked about how cool the establishment is and what it’s doing for our neighborhood. I couldn’t agree more.

With that trusty information in hand, I now also know that based on his experiences that evening, he’ll be telling many people that they need to swing in and check our hood out. THANK YOU, COUNCILMEMBER!

That’s community development in its simplest form, dear people.

So now that you’re fully aware of one of my civic affinities, I’ll leave you with some advice.

Governments only function well, or at all, when its citizens are engaged and active.
