THE 11TH HOUR: A dire warning about the demise of planet Earth, presented in a deadening format of talking heads and what often looks like stock nature footage.  The doc has a lot of valuable information, but fails to convey it in an effective, involving way.  Rent Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” instead. (PG) HH – RE

The Grand Cinema: Thurs 9:15.

Yelm Cinemas @ Prairie Park: Fri-Thurs, Sept. 20 12:20, 2:30, 4:40, 6:55, 9:10.

3:10 TO YUMA: Christian Bale plays an Easterner who lost a leg in the Civil War and has now come to the Arizona territory to try ranching.  Russell Crowe plays the vicious leader of a gang feared in the territory.  Almost by unlucky fate, the rancher joins a posse to bring the killer to a nearby town where he will be taken by train to prison.  Splendid dialogue and acting, also by Peter Fonda, Ben Foster and Gretchen Mol, restore the wounded heart of the Western and return it to its glory days.  Directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line”). BECOMING JANE: Fictionalized speculation about a great romance in Jane Austen’s 20th year.  The would-be author (Anne Hathaway) meets a handsome lawyer (James McAvoy) and wonders, if he loses his allowance from his spiteful uncle, could she support them by her writing (mostly still unwritten)?  Engaging love story in charming Britlit Land (actually Ireland), even if it’s mostly made up and has little to do with the real Jane.  With Julie Walters, James Cromwell and Maggie Smith. THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM: Run, Jason, Run.  The Bourne films have taken chases beyond a storytelling technique and made them into the story.  This time Jason hurtles through London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris, Tangier and Turin in search of the identity the CIA took from him. Matt Damon plays a man who survives one impossible situation after another, in a superior action thriller that doesn’t much care who his enemies are, as long as he’s in a big hurry to find them or escape them.  With Julia Stiles, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney. DEATH AT A FUNERAL: British comedy involving unplanned entrances and exits, misbehavior of corpses and just plain wacky eccentricity.  Directed by Frank Oz, it finds its laughs in the peculiar human trait of being most tempted to laugh when we’re absolutely not supposed to.  With Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes, Ewen Bremner, Jane Asher, Rupert Graves and, last but not least, Peter Dinklage. (R) HHH – RE

The Grand Cinema: Thurs 2:30, 5:10, 7:10, 9:05. Fri-Sun 2:30, 5:10, 7:10, 9. Also Sat-Sun 12:30. Mon-Wed 5:10, 7:10, 9. Thurs, Sept. 20 2:30, 5:10, 7:10, 9.

HAIRSPRAY: Pure fun, from the moment a roly-poly teenager named Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) bounces out of bed and serenades the neighborhood with “Good Morning, Baltimore!”  Circa 1962, she dreams of getting on the local TV teen dance show, but on her way there she gets indignant about how the show is all-white except for one day a month.  Based on the 1988 movie and the 2002 Broadway musical; still fresh.  With John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Christopher Walken. (PG) HHH1/2 – RE

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX: Harry is convinced the evil Voldemort has returned, but no one will heed his warning, and the Ministry of Magic cracks down, imposing a fearsome new teacher (Imelda Staunton) at Hogwarts.  Her name is Umbridge, and she takes plenty.  Harry and friends hatch a plot to defend Headmaster Dumbledore from her ravages, in a movie that is darker, more solemn, less whimsical than we expect in the series. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

AMC Narrows Plaza 8: Thurs 2, 5, 7:55. Fri-Sun 1:30, 4:25, 7:20. Also Fri-Sat 10:15. Also Sat morning 10:35 a.m. Mon-Thurs, Sept. 20 2, 4:55, 7:50.

I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY: Firefighter Kevin James saves his friend Adam Sandler from the collapse of a burning building, so Sandler grants his colleague “any favor.”  Widower James decides that they should masquerade as domestic partners to ensure that James’ children will be entitled to his city benefits should he be killed in the line of duty.  A funny premise turns into an uneven and choppy cinematic ride.  The hearts of the filmmakers are in the right place; it’s a shame they didn’t try harder to make this funny.  With Jessica Biel, Steve Buscemi and Dan Aykroyd. (PG-13) HH1/2 – BZ

Regal South Hill Cinema 6: Thurs 12:30, 4:20, 7:20, 9:55. Fri-Thurs, Sept. 20 12:20, 3:50, 6:40, 9:20.

THE INVASION: The fourth, and the least, of the movies made from Jack Finney’s classic science fiction novel “The Body Snatchers.”  Here is a great story born to be creepy, and the movie churns through it like a road company production. If the first three movies served as parables for their times, this one keeps shooting off parable rockets that fizzle out.  Nicole Kidman stars as a mom fighting off alien spores for herself and her son, Daniel Craig is her current squeeze, Jeremy Northam her ominous ex-husband, Jeffrey Wright the brilliant scientist who solves everything in two concise speeches, and Jackson Bond is Kidman’s young son.  The actors do what they can with a plot that we concede must be implausible but does not necessarily have to upstage the Mad magazine version. (PG-13) HH – RE

Galaxy Tacoma 6: Thurs 12:45, 5:40, 10:25.

MOLIERE: The story of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also known as Moliere, the writer who would be known as the father and true master of comic satire, before he became famous.  In fact, he was 22, bankrupt and in jail. (PG-13) – BW

The Grand Cinema: Fri-Sun 2:10, 4:35, 7, 9:20. Also Sat-Sun 11:45 a.m. Mon-Wed 4:35, 7, 9:20. Thurs, Sept. 20 2:10, 4:35, 7, 9:20.

MR. BEAN’S HOLIDAY: As always, Rowan Atkinson’s gift for physical comedy and his rubbery facial expressions give life to his iconic Mr. Bean character.  In this unusual “road” comedy, we follow the bumbling Bean from one mishap and misadventure to another in a comedy of errors that would have been better if the predictable “Bean” bits had not slowed down the pace between the more original and funny scenes in the film. (PG) HH1/2 – BZ

THE NANNY DIARIES: Told from the point of view of a bright college graduate (Scarlett Johansson) who is accidentally hired as a nanny by a rich Manhattan family.  Satire on the lifestyles of the rich and famous, with Laura Linney effective as the complex Mrs. X and Paul Giamatti as her cheating zillionaire husband.  Sort of bland, obvious and comfortable; nobody is really despicable enough. (PG-13) HH1/2 – RE

RATATOUILLE: Disney and Pixar deliver a marvelous animated tale of friendship, following one’s dreams and the art of French haute cuisine.  The hero of the story is a tiny Parisian rat named Remy (voice by Patton Oswalt), who one day finds himself in the kitchen of one of the world’s greatest chefs, where he soon befriends the kitchen’s busboy Linguini (voice by Lou Romano).  The two form a unique bond that affords Remy the chance to indulge in his culinary artistry and Linguini the chance to make something of himself.  The computer-animated visuals are stunning, the story is compelling, and the music will carry you away.  The film is rated G, which stands for gloriously entertaining. Grownups will find this one irresistible. Oh yeah, the kiddies will like it, too. (G) HHH1/2 – MD

RUSH HOUR 3: Chris Tucker is once again Carter, the motormouth LAPD cop who’s always in trouble, and Jackie Chan is once again Lee, the ace Hong Kong cop called in to partner with him.  A case involving an ambassador’s shooting and secret documents from a Triad gang sends them to Paris, where of course it is necessary for them to defend their lives while hanging from the Eiffel Tower.  Pretty much what you’d expect, but kinda fun. THE SIMPSONS MOVIE: A feature-length adventure starring America’s most dysfunctional family, which succeeds in the nearly fatal pollution of Springfield.  That story is interspersed with a lot of political asides and a wickedly funny spoof of the most famous sequence in the Austin Powers movies. SHOOT ‘EM UP: The only film I can think of that opens with the hero delivering a baby during a gun battle, severing the umbilical cord with a gunshot, and then killing a villain by penetrating his brain with a raw carrot.  Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti and Monica Bellucci co-star in a WAY-over-the-top violent action thriller, redeemed by style and satirical exaggeration, but still too extreme for all but hard-boiled action fans.  You have been warned.  Deserves an R-plus rating.  Written and directed by Michael Davis, who knows what he’s doing. STARDUST: A shooting star (Claire Danes) falls into a forbidden kingdom, and Charlie Cox enters the kingdom to get it for his love (Sienna Miller).  Also fighting for the star/woman: a wicked witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a dying king (Peter O’Toole).  Robert De Niro turns up as a cross-dressing pirate in an airship.  Cluttered and too busy; funny, not boring, but “The Princess Bride” it’s not. SUPERBAD: Four-letter raunch-a-rama with a heart, and a fascination for other key organs.  Best friends Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) have been inseparable in high school, mainly because they were equally unpopular.  Now it is the last night of the high school year, bringing to mind the ancient truism that if you haven’t had sex yet and you don’t have it tonight, you will never have had sex in high school. TEN CANOES: Tribal  culture one thousand years ago in Australia.  Part adventure, part comedy, part anthropology. (NR) – BW

The Grand Cinema: Thurs 2:40, 5, 7:20.

TRANSFORMERS: Shia LaBeouf stars as a high school student who gets a used Camaro that is part of an invasion by two groups of battling robots.   The Transformers and Decepticons can twist, fold and double in upon themselves, like a Rubik’s Cube crossed with a contortionist.  Opening scenes are exciting and funny, with a lot of stuff that blows up real good, but the grand finale, robots battling in special effects, goes on too long. (PG-13) HHH – RE
