South Bay Dickerson's Slow and Low BBQ

Casual dining with comfort food

This Olympia barbeque house has plenty of parking and a décor of “working man’s farm” with antique farm hand tools hanging on the walls next to nicely framed black and white photos of old farm land and barns. Sliding barn doors make up most of the back wall of the restaurant while one entire wall is made up of two floor-to-ceiling windows covered by screens to keep the flies out and still allow a cooling breeze in. Since opening about five months ago, Dickerson’s family-owned restaurant has enjoyed a bustling lunch and take-out business and is the epitome of casual dining with comfort food. The menu is a carnivore’s dream with rack of beef and pork ribs, pulled pork, spicy sausage, smoked chicken salad, brisket, and barbeque chicken.

Served as an appetizer with little paper cups of sweet vanilla butter, palm sized moist corn bread squares were easily three inches high with real pieces of corn in them. Tangy barbeque sauce slathered chicken breast and one fat rib ($8.99) made the perfect sized combination plate. Slow smoked brisket ($8.99) had a mouth watering smoky flavor throughout the meat.

All dishes are available as la carte for lunch or as a full meal with corn bread and two side dishes of either baked beans, Cole slaw, potato salad, mixed green salad or baked macaroni and cheese ($1.75). Word is the Cole slaw is so good Dickerson’s BBQ is constantly running out. Baked beans with large chunks of cooked white onion were savory, not sugary. Deep-dish macaroni and cheese weere baked till the cheesy top was lightly browned. Peeled white potato salad had a pleasing mix of chopped onion, celery and pepper.

Wash all the messy barbeque down with a deliciously tart and sweet jumbo glass of strawberry lemonade ($2.50) with real berries. Organic coffee from Olympia Coffee Roasting Company, assorted sodas and sweet tea are also offered.
