Get cozy with art

Cuddle up this week with arts and culture in Tacoma

You felt that nip in the air. I know you did because I felt it too.

It’s cozy weather, pull-up-a-quilt-and-snuggle weather.

But don’t do it — view it!

Quilts

The “Gee’s Bend” quilts will come to the Tacoma Art Museum Saturday, Sept 22. Louisiana Bendolph, Mary Lee Bendolph, Loretta Bennett and Nettie Young, several of the Gee’s Bend quilters, will come to the museum for a meet and greet Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Museum, where they’ll be available to sign copies of the exhibition catalogue.

Admission is $5 for members and $15 for non-members, which includes museum admission.

Third Thursday Art Walk

You want freebies?

Third Thursday Art Walk consumes downtown Tacoma tonight. It allows art enthusiasts into the museums free and serves up some fancy new treats like the brand spanking new Helm Gallery, which looks to be bringing an intriguing blend of avant-garde and accessibility to the art scene.

Walk through the standard venues and see some new sights tonight, like the new works at the Sanford & Son Middle Floor Gallery by familiar names James Hume and Jeff Olsen, who’ll be on hand from 5 to 9 p.m. for an artists’ reception.

Embracing the change of season, Gallery Madera will present “Change,” featuring works by Karen Luke Fildes and Rae Belkin, as well as sculptural wood turnings by Milo Mirabelli and Christi Mirabelli. Tacoma singer-songwriter Mary Win will be on hand with musical entertainment during the artists’ reception there from 5 to 8 p.m.

Also opening tonight, Tacoma Public Library’s Handforth Gallery will bring a new exhibition pairing Joni Joachims with Katie Carnell. While Joachims’ work features unnoticed T-Town, Carnell’s features an intriguing format — seven inches by 10 feet — telling stories about Irish immigrants fleeing famine.

“Auntie Mame”

Less about famine, and more about appreciating the banquet of goodies life sets before you, Tacoma Little Theatre’s production of “Auntie Mame” began on Sept. 14 and runs through Oct. 7.

100th Monkey

If you’re less inclined to want to sit with a bunch of people and be warmed by the actions on stage, and more inclined to party it up, the 100th Monkey Party set to happen Wednesday, Sept. 26 is your ticket to doing just that. Lisa Ikeda hosts this party, for which Jennevieve Schlemmer is creating the tiles and the Malcolm Clark Band will play. The fun goes from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Tacoma Art Museum; self-serve wine is back, though this monkey party has a sub-theme of “no reds allowed.”

This will be the last monkey party of the year, so be sure to get there and welcome a new season of good cozy times with friends and art.
