Extensions, braids, fabulously elaborate bridal up-dos: many of these styles borrow from African-American Hair Artistry, which arguably began when Madam C.J. Walker invented products that, ironically, sought to emulate the straightened “Suzie Caucasian” hair. Years later, after the likes of the Supremes, Patti LaBelle, and others were coiffed with pieces by Caucasians, the Vietnam War happened, and Asian manufacturers discovered a market for African-textured hair.  This opened up a whole new world of creative possibility for African-American stylists, and a culture of hair was born, and refined.

At Valentino’s, you may see Asian-created hair, but it’s an African-American-owned enterprise.  And the owner of that enterprise, Judy Neal, seeks to educate as she seeks to bring community — not competition — to her empire in Parkland, which includes wigs, weaves, ponytails, products, and styling services.

She pushed to become a force in the Asian-dominated African hair-supply market, and achieved her place with the opening of the new location of Valentino’s.

To celebrate, and to say thank you to the community that has embraced and supported her, Neal is throwing a soiree in high style, the Head to Toe Hair and Fashion Extravaganza happening April 14 at the Tacoma Elks Lodge, starting at 6 p.m.

Eight stylists will bring on board 30 models who will all get hair courtesy of Valentino’s; customers, vendors, and even area pastors will get their moment of glory in the evening.  Admission is $10-$25. — Jessica Corey-Butler
