Sunday, Sept. 17, runners will descend upon Fort Steilacoom Park to participate in JustTri's inaugural 2017 Lakewood Half Marathon, 10K and Savannah's 5K Run. According to 22-year Army veteran, Lt. Col. Marc Chung, founder of JustTri Athletic Events, "The 2017 Lakewood Half Marathon, 10K & Savannah's 5K Run are community supported running events with the intention of donating all the proceeds to service veteran and leukemia research nonprofit organizations."

Chung goes on to talk about his fledgling foundation, JustTri: "The Mission of JustTri is to set up local athletic events that are community friendly, supportive of a healthy lifestyle and to raise money for worthy causes."

This year's half marathon will begin at Ft. Steilacoom Park at 8 a.m. sharp, followed by the 10K at 8:10 a.m. The route for both runs will meander along the beautiful Steilacoom waterfront before winding it's way back to the finish line at the park. The 5K, which is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m., will follow the brand new Waughhop Lake Trail within Ft. Steilacoom Park. Runners and walkers are invited to participate in all three races and strollers are welcome in the 5K.

A medical staff will be onsite and the race will be timed using cutting edge "chip in bib" technology. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place male and female runners in each race and all participants will receive a medal and a T-shirt. Rest stops complete with water stations will be provided along the way, but this is a "cup-less" race, so bring your own water bottle to refill as needed.

This year's theme is "Who Are You Tri-ing For?" and proceeds from the half marathon and 10K will benefit various service veteran's nonprofits and Rainier Therapeutic Riding, which "uses horses to facilitate physical and emotional healing for our nation's heroes and their families ("

The 5K Savannah's Run, named for Savannah Lingerfelter, a local 7-year-old leukemia survivor. The run will donate its proceeds to support cancer research through the American Cancer Society.

The race will be limited to 500 participants, so early registration, available at, is encouraged. The cost to register by Sept. 16 is $60 for the half marathon and $50 for the 5K and 10K. Registration the day of the race (space permitting) will cost $70 for the half marathon and $60 for the 5K and 10K races and will begin at 6:30 a.m. Race information packets will be available Sept. 15 and 16 at Topside Restaurant in Steilacoom for those who register early.

This year's race is sponsored by a number of local businesses, including: Lakewood Ford, Rainbow Therapeutic Riding, and Shane Klinkenhammer Real Estate. Other sponsors include: Topside Restaurant and Grill, Farrelli's (who is donating pizza to feed hungry runners and walkers), Guitar Center (donating two guitars as prizes), Zoot Wet Suit (donating a wet suit to be given away), Evergreen Home Loans, Floor Trader, the DuPont chapter of Wear Blue to Remember, Wells Fargo (who's employees have volunteered to help the race go smoothly), and Mountain Mist Water (who is donating the water).
