The Washington Veterans Home, located outside of Port Orchard, recently held an event to recognize its astounding number of volunteers.

For the past year, volunteers at the home collectively logged 4,973 hours. This number was up more than 1,000 hours from last year. The Washington Veterans Home caters to 240 residents who require skilled-nursing care and, as part of that, volunteers are an integral part of making life better for the former military residents.

In addition to distributing certificates, the annual recognition event featured an interactive performance by magician Louie Fox, who was featured on season six of America's Got Talent, as well as an elaborate sundae dessert bar, which played into the theme of ‘Volunteers are one of the sweetest things in life.'

"As always, we just want to say thank you to all of the volunteers who make serving our Veterans a priority," said Tami Reuter, recreation therapy manager at the home. "They do so much to improve the quality of life for our residents. They've pulled weeds, written letters ... you name it, and they do it."

A number of groups with military ties were also recognized for their volunteer hours, including the USS Bremerton, the USS John C Stennis, the USS Ronald Regan (CVN 76) and the South Kitsap High School Navy Junior ROTC.

"We will find a job for you - there's always a way to make a difference and serve those who served," said Reuter, who also serves as the site's volunteer coordinator. She can assist those who prefer to volunteer at the home in Orting as well.
