Souper Pho

A broad menu offers nearly everyone’s favorite

ANNOUNCER: Open just over a month, Souper Pho in Tacoma's Westgate Center is designed with family in mind. A little taste of several Asian cuisine favorites will surely fit the bill for everyone. Jackie and Dutch are always up for a menu with lots of options.

JACKIE: Souper Pho is one of those grand openers that might have gone unnoticed thanks to their locale. Tucked away in a busy stripmall off of N. 30th and Pearl, the complex is constantly abuzz with activity. This said, this makes Souper Pho an excellent option for a lunch and dinner pit stop while running errands. The menu features a matrimony of pho, Thai and Chinese fare options. So, you're likely to find that favorite dish with an exotic flair.

DUTCH: A quick stop is exactly what I had time for this week, and grabbing a fast lunch that is flavorful and fresh with a lot of options isn't easy to find. With two kids in tow, I was happy to find popular dishes like Teriyaki available in chicken or pork, and chicken katsu, both of which are conservative selections for those with a less adventurous palate or kids too big for the kid menu.

JACKIE: Skip the wings. The little fellas had a lovely crisp exterior, but the side of watery fish sauce didn't make them anything to write home to Mom about. The Basil Chicken was both colorful and flavorful, though. On my visit, the ultimate spice level of "5" wasn't quite met, but there are tasty adornments tableside you can add to elevate the heat. A duo of scrumptious crab rangoons were a nice addition to the plate. Each bite boasted red peppers, onions, basil and a slathering of delightful sauce and red pepper flakes.

DUTCH: I love a good rice noodle dish, and the grilled prawns Bun plate fits the bill here. Heaps of fresh steamed noodles are partnered with bean sprouts, shredded lettuce, fresh scallions, and eight grilled prawns; all of which is topped with fish sauce, crushed peanuts, and accompanied with a vinegar wash and side salad. The prawns are grilled with minimal seasoning allowing you to choose one of the many sauces available at the table, as well as avoid having the noodles get lost in the plate.

JACKIE: The Vietnamese Sandwich might be my new go-to. In between two slices of lightly toasted French bread, you'll find sliced cucumber, pickled carrot, cilantro and jalapeno with your choice of chicken, pork, lemongrass beef, Thai beef or tofu. I found the bread to be perfectly toasted and the meat-to-bread ratio perfect.

DUTCH: Lastly, I saw scores of people grabbing their meals in to-go bags. Many of which took advantage of the beer, wine and sake that are on the menu. Personally, I'd go for the Vietnamese dripped coffee. It is available as either a hot or cold option, but the appeal is that it is made the traditional way with sweetened condensed milk, which gives both a sweet and heavy creaminess to the beverage.
