Doyle's Public House

More than just beer and soccer

Already well known in North Tacoma for its great Irish beer and the loud soccer fans that gather for matches televised on one of the multiple TV's around the bar, Doyle's Public House has much more to offer than beer and soccer.  Items such as Irish soda bread, Irish Tatchos (a potatoes version of nachos), marry mint pie and Scotch eggs are just a few of the house specialties that are unique to Doyle's. Additionally, during the month of October, this is one of the few places in town that you can catch the Rugby World Cup games from England.

The throwback interior of Doyle's grabs you right away, with the dark mahogany and soccer scarfs adorning the entire bar, you know right away this is a place for drinking and cheering. Beer such as Irish favorites Guinness and Kilkenny are supported with a selection of Irish whiskey cocktails and even Strongbow Cider from England. The Irish whiskey cocktails are creative, flavorful, and a great addition to any of the starch driven dishes at Doyle's Public House. I visited on a hot and muggy day, so the crisp, dry Strongbow Cider was exactly what was needed to hit the spot.

Very little says Irish more than bangers and mash, and when it's topped with dark, rich, Guinness gravy, it's difficult to pass up. The "mash" is a lightly seasoned pile of garlic mashed potatoes which has great flavor but is not overpowering to the rest of the plate; this is then topped with three generous soft sausage links which also are lightly seasoned. The star is clearly the Guinness gravy, which brings everything together with its hearty flavor. The plate is then topped with fresh, crisp shallots and house-made caramelized onions that provide that last bit of "kick."

Finally, add the fact that Doyle's offers both breakfast in the morning hours and two happy hours daily from 3-6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and you do not have to be a soccer fanatic to enjoy all that Doyle's has to offer.  In fact, they may just turn you into a soccer fan before you know it, as it is easy to get caught up in the excitement that absolutely exemplifies Doyle's Public House.
