Our hours of sunlight have waned away to a slim, cloudy reality these last few weeks, and it's darn chilly. Daydreams of wrapping up in a warm cozy blanket and camping out next to a fire are running rampant, but who has time for that? All of this can mean only one thing: it's soup season. Piping hot bowls of steaming, delicious soup are exactly what this time of year calls for. It's like a warm hug for your belly. Let's raise our glasses to our comforting warmth served up in a bowl.

Pho King

Ask a group of Tacomans where to find the best Pho in town,  and they almost chant in unison, "Pho King!" I would have mistaken it for obscenity if it weren't for the exuberance. I can only presume the Hilltop gem chose the moniker to announce its Pho royalty, or maybe because they're pho-king amazing and have a sense of humor. I didn't ask. But Pho is like granny's chicken noodle soup. It's a cure all for what ails ya, from flu-like symptoms to a case of the Mondays. Steaming delicious broth with aromas of ginger and spices is accompanied by a fantastic selection of bean sprouts, basil, jalapeno, cilantro, onions and options for meat like meatballs, beef shank, chicken, tripe and more.

Infinite Soups

Infinite Soups is in a lovely locale downtown sandwiched embedded in a pool hall. Though it seems an unlikely locale, Infinite Soups spoons out more than 25 varieties of soup each day. The aroma alone as you walk in the door will make your mouth water. To keep up with the ever-changing menu, folks can opt to keep an eye on the company's Facebook page, which is updated daily with what's available.  Serving up the likes of coconut clam, Tuscan sausage and black bean chipotle, Infinite Soups lists its selections under "vegetarian," "vegan," "creamy" and "non creamy," so there's a little something for all soupy preferences. There's no room for dining in, so this is one to take back to the office. Get the quart size and share; your office buddy will adore you.

Alina's Soups

Alina's Soups is unique in that there is no singular location to get your fix. Alina Mikolajczyk concocts her soups from seasonal, locally sourced and organic ingredients, then packages it up for locations throughout Tacoma, including farmers markets, Cafe Brosseau, Proctor Frozen Yogurt, Tacoma Food Co-op and Ubiquitous Journey. The fresh nature of her soups means an ever-rotating selection like Moroccan butternut squash, borscht, white beans and kale, ideal for the health conscious, gluten-free or vegan-friendly diet.
