The Review

Unlike Tacoma's condo boom, expansion has been a good thing for the brother team behind Gateway to India. Tacoma's popular North Indian restaurant now has a sister site in Gig Harbor. Opening in November 2009, just as promised by co-owner C.J. Singh, the bigger kitchen with extra broilers at Gig Harbor's Gateway to India mean more meat dishes and a larger variety of food from different regions of India. But authentic Northern Indian fare remains the menu staple. As in Tacoma, pricing is fair; customer service is on point, and an inexpensive, appealing lunch buffet is offered. What sets Gig Harbor apart from Tacoma? Loads of parking, updated air conditioning, warm weather patio seating, and cocktails.

The naan bread is so soft and billowy, a perfect pusher for all the delicious sauces in Indian food. Gateway makes it with garlic, paneer (a mild cheese), potato and peas, fresh mint, onion, spinach. There are 11 different kinds - even a sweet one made with nuts and fruit.

The lamb - the shahi gosht korma - is tender and savory. Topped with sliced almonds, the full meat flavor of ultra tender lamb still stood out in this slowly simmered, boneless dish with yogurt-based sauce with savory garlic and ginger. Basmati rice was fluffy, moist and aromatic.

Mango pudding, ginger ice cream, and julab gamun (sugary soaked donut-like dumplings) are stellar.

Hours: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-3 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

"BAD BAD BAD"
We went there and had the worst service ever: 1) When we entered the restaurant, the manager did not seat us as he was too busy playing with his cell phone. 2) We asked the waitress and another waiter if they would accept the Entertainment coupon and both of them did not see any problem with that but at the end of the meal, the manager wouldn't honor it. 3) If that wasn't bad enough, they wouldn't run our credit card unless we put the tip amount down first. 4) The portions were small - perfect for those of you who are on a diet. If you want superior Indian food with great service, go to Bombay Bistro on 6th, although it is more expensive.

I am calling BS on "Walter". We have had nothing short of stellar customer service at Gateway in Gig Harbor. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful when choosing dishes we have never tried. We love the buffet that gives us a variety of choices and endless naan. If you are on the Peninsula like us, give it a try with an Elysian Jasmine IPA as well.

What an awful experience. First we stood at the front waiting to be seated and we were pretty much ignored. Then once we were finally seated we were served water without ice, which in a restaurant I think is extremely odd. My father ordered a glass of wine, which was small and cost $10. We ordered an appetizer which took a total of 45 min to arrive, we were told he would be back to take our food order, he never came back, another lady took it for us about 30 min after we ordered the appetizer. She couldn’t believe we hadn’t ordered yet. Meanwhile we are out of water. Then an hour later our food arrives, people that were seated after us had left already. Not once did he apologize. He told us a manager would come talk to us and he never did. Food portions are small, food isn’t fresh, probably a lot of frozen food and mixes. Just an all around disaster.
