Bite-sized foodie news for your consumption

By Jackie Fender on August 22, 2019

I recently spent about a million dollars at Target shopping for school supplies. It was a harsh reality check summer is almost over. The good news, you can stop worrying about your "summer bod" intentions (I mean, I'm team body positivity and really love food so you can imagine that mine never really took off -- though I did eat that monstrous kale salad for the Best of Tacoma issue). You can dive deep into your food amore, it's almost sweater season.

You had me at donut. Anyone in the South Sound (and beyond, let's be real) has fond memories of long lines to the little pink house in Lakewood -- Original House of Donuts. They've been slinging fresh, delectable sweet treats for 60 years now. That equates to generations of donut lovers, probably millions of maple bars and a legacy.

To celebrate this anniversary, OHOD is hosting their 4th annual World Donut Eating Contest, Saturday, Aug. 24, at 1:30 p.m. Watch contestants devour as many glazed cake donuts that they can. The grand prize winner will receive free donuts for one year (one dozen donuts per month for 12 months), a free T-shirt of their choice, their very own Donut Championship trophy, and their name on the Official World Donut Championship Trophy to be displayed in the store. There will be specials offered all week leading up to the contest, so follow them on Facebook to stay up to date! 9638 Gravelly Lake Dr., Lakewood

Tacoma's Sixth Avenue is a hub of dining options for just about every occasion. Just when you think it's reached max capacity, it continues to flourish. There's a buzz about the upcoming opening of Field Bar. Though anticipated opening is this fall, we are already intrigued. The website boasts, "Expect tasty cocktails, natural wine, delicious snacks and always good vibes."

Already open and experiencing intense soft opening vibes is Gather Juice Co. Their limited menu now includes cold-pressed juice and mouth-watering smoothies that are selling out before the end of the business day. Healthy bowls and snacks will soon join the fun. It's refreshing to see another quality and fresh grab-n-go option in town. Go early, to score the goods. 2612 Sixth Ave., Tacoma

Tacoma Beer Week may be over but here in the South Sound, it's always beer o'clock! The South Sound Made Beer & Cider Week is coming to a close Saturday, Aug. 24, at Northwest Beerwerks in Olympia. Closing out 10 days of brew and cider-fueled festivities by connecting with local crafters of the sweet, sweet nectar. 420 Steele St. SE, Olympia, southsoundmade.com
