I think of Halloween as a type of training. Your body needs to be eased into the season of eating. To amp up for all the holiday parties, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, a month-long pumpkin spice indulgence with a finale of candy corn gorgefest is the best sort of training. And while Halloween is more for the wee ghosts and goblins in your life, there are plenty of festive treats geared towards those with more mature palates. Below I've included just a few of my personal favorite Halloween-y type treats that are sure to provide a delightful spike in your caloric intake (don't fret, you'll burn some calories tromping around town trick or treating).

Corina Bakery reigns supreme when it comes to local baked goods. The Corina display case is a smorgasbord of pastries, cakes adorned with rich icing, breakfast breads and sweet treats to pair with your coffee. Seasonal favorites include pumpkin cake, pumpkin scones and squash bread. The bakery specializes in gluten-free and vegan options, so even those with dietary restrictions can indulge. Gluten-free, vegan Pumpkin Whoopee Pie anyone? 602 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma

Sometimes a scream is of the bloody murder sort. The type that escapes your lips as you tiptoe through a haunted corn maze. Other times, it's more of a squeal of utter joy. This is the sort that is par for the course when crossing the threshold at Ice Cream Social. Seasonal flavors abound here from Mulled Cider Sorbet, dairy-free and vegan Coconut Cinnamon and of course everyone's favorite seasonal bite, Pumpkin! Hit up their scoop shops at 2914 6th Ave., Tacoma, and 5107 Main St., Ruston.

Another scoop shop worth giving a try is Bliss Small Batch Creamery. I know what you're thinking, "Jackie, ice cream is a summer treat!" but let me just say, apple or pumpkin pie ala mode is the quintessential holiday dessert, and for that, ice cream is required. See where I'm going with this? Bliss also has Pumpkin ice cream and adds Candied Maple Walnut and Cardamom Apple Pear to the seasonal offerings. 3556 Market Place W., University Place

Matriarch Lounge at Alma Mater boast lush vibes paired with craft cocktails and good eats. They might not sound like a Halloween must but their Mrs. Voorhees is a moniker that begs to differ. Sweet potato-infused bourbon paired with brown sugar, Angostura bitters and a Scotch rinse will warm that chill deep down in your soul that lingers after watching a good horror flick. Bonus: a toasted marshmallow garnish finishes it all off. 1322 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma

Another cocktail hot spot might just be playing your favorite vintage horror flicks on the big screen and pairing them with Spooktacular sips. The Church Cantina ran Stephen King's Revival as a recent special. With Rumchata and pumpkin pie syrup laying the base, add manifesto cold brew for good measure and it brings the basic PSL to the next level. 5240 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma

Each week, En Rama collaborates with the Grand Cinema for their Weird Elephant series. Typically, the theater features funky, spooky, spine-chilling or just plain weird films, and En Rama pairs a sipper to fuel the festivities for that pre-movie night cocktail. Naturally, for the month of October, the Weird Elephant features some thrilling finds, and though we don't know what En Rama has up their sleeve, I recommend you check it out. 1102 A St., Tacoma

Tease Chocolates makes delectable chocolatey treats all year long for young and old alike. Some are geared for more mature palates, like ghost pepper truffles or their Irish Cream Mousse Pyramids. We recently spied some frightful, skull-shaped candies in-store that are certain to wow Halloween shindig guests! But even if you don't go the skull-shaped route, their chocolates are sinfully delicious. 610 N. First St., Tacoma

The Zodiac Supper Club boasts a funky kitsch matched by none and sets the perfect ambiance for grown ghouls and goblins to let that freak flag fly. They also have phenomenal cocktails that pair nicely with the autumnal season and reinvent your traditional expectations when it comes to holiday sippers. This includes a frozen pumpkin spice pina colada, and a mulled bourbon old-fashioned. Try them on for size. 1116 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Tacoma
