Best of Tacoma 2015: Best Sandwich

MSM Deli

By Rachel Thomson on July 23, 2015

Don't be fooled by the exterior of the MSM Deli. Tourists and casual passersbys might mistake it for a gas station. There's little to indicate that there's a deli counter inside - and no painted windows or sandwich boards advertising daily specials.

Sure, MSM Deli is a convenience store where you can pick up some batteries or a pack of gum. But locals know this place as a casual, friendly and affordable lunch spot. Most items on the menu don't exceed $6.50.

MSM (which stands for Magical Sandwich Makers) is a hole in the wall, but is far from a dive as its menu features sandwiches made with fresh ingredients.

Local favorites include the meatball sandwich featuring Italian-seasoned tender meatballs with melted provolone cheese slathered in a rich marinara sauce. For those wanting to integrate more veggies in their diet, try the Deli Club, which has lettuce, onions, avocado and bean sprouts.

MSM even has a section inspired by the Middle East featuring an assortment of pita wraps, including a falafel pita stuffed with ground chickpea croquettes, tzatziki sauce, cucumbers and herbs.

Not satisfied with what's on the menu? Patrons have the opportunity to create their own sandwiches. Aspiring sandwich artists can choose from seven different types of bread, eight types of cheese and several toppings.

Dining Tips: If you arrive late in the lunch hour, there's often a long wait. The parking lot is small, so it may be advisable to call ahead and pick up your order.
