Walking past rosemary bushes, lavender plants, and a plenty used bike rack up to a wooden screen door and into the warmth of San Francisco Street Bakery is something Olympians have been doing for 25 years.

But, for the past year, there is something new to experience at the bakery - a dinner menu. From pear and cheese salad to charcuterie, and grass-fed cheeseburgers to fresh Dungeness crab, the rotating menu is a far cry from the day's gingerbread, danishes and bagels.

Dinner service is Thursday through Sunday from 5:30-9 p.m. and even offers a kid's menu with items such as mac 'n' cheese and housemade ranch dressing. Pizza to go is one of the bakery/bistro's specialties. House-made fennel sausage, locally harvested chanterelle mushrooms, roasted dill potatoes, Brussels sprouts and sweet onions are just a few of the tasty toppings.

Oh, and did I mention, it serves wine?

And to top off the appeal, happy hour is available the first hour of restaurant service and all day Sunday, and includes $5 and $6 portions as well as $4 glasses of wine.

The change comes with a passing of the rolling pin from parents to children. Parents Gene Otto and Judi Mendoza have handed the business to their daughter, Carmen Otto, and her brother, Nolan, as well as Carmen's husband, Jeremy Schwartz. The youngest member of the family is Lando, who, at 2 years old, is expecting a sibling this April.

Things have come full circle. Nolan and Carmen both spent their youth in the outdoor gardens or the floury kitchen, with dad baking in the background and mom doing the bookkeeping upstairs.

Now, Gene and Judi get to settle into retirement, and Carmen, kids and crew get to share their love of all things culinary. Offering locally sourced food, creative dishes and serving quality, affordable wine are priorities for the new owners.

Their approach must be working, because feedback from customers is positive and business keeps growing.

"I think there is a lot of word of mouth happening," said Carmen. "This neighborhood is our lifeblood - the bakery/bistro is a member of the community, (and) it provides families with good quality food made from wholesome ingredients."

"Now that we have three generations here is so important," she continued. "We are such a close-knit group of people - that's what's important about the bakery. And the idea that we might be in business for 25 more years under new ownership - 50 years in Olympia - that just blows my mind."
