I'm going to just go ahead and say it. Some holidays serve the sole purpose of giving folks an opportunity to let their hair down and whoop it up. One such holiday is Cinco de Mayo, for those who didn't pay attention in Spanish class that is the 5th of May. Now, now don't take this the wrong way. I'm sure there are a plethora of people who are truly rejoicing in the Mexican army's victory over French forces during the Battle of Puebla, but there seems to be an awful lot of people who are looking to consume gratuitous amounts blue agave fermented juices and salted rimmed margaritas under the assumption that the 5th of May is the Mexican Independence Day.

In my quest to find the best South Sound Cinco shenanigans, so far I found the celebratory scene as quiet as a siesta. Save for a few HUGE shindigs that will have the tequila boozes flowing most places will be celebrating with buckets of corona and a mellow Sunday evening. The following are a few establishments doing it up for Cinco.

Olympians can look forward to a reality television sized bash hosted by Bad Girls Season 10 reality star Raquel "Rocky" Santiago aka "The Cali Contender" at Jezebels (414 Fourth Ave. E.). Drink specials will include Coronas, shots of tequila and tequila sunrises while entertainment is sure to be lively with women's oil wrestling. I dare someone to wear a Lucha Libre mask and take home the $200 cash prize.

Masa (2811 Sixth Ave.) does Cinco de Mayo up BIG! Big Party. Big Entertainment. Big Burrito?! Oh yes, celebrating their fifth annual Jefe de Jefe (Boss of the Bosses) burrito challenge. Randy Santel, competitive eater and body builder returns to defend the crown. Last year he devoured the 6-pound burrito in a record 7 minutes and 12 seconds. If you think you have what it takes you must pre-register for the competition by 6 p.m., while the competition begins at 8 p.m. The cash prize is $300 - surely enough to fund the party that ensues. As for entertainment, show your moves with two DJs spinning everything from hip-hop to salsa and enjoy live music from the Kim Archer Band, North Slope and Travis Barker and Co.

With Tacoma's largest tequila selection, the Matador is sure to not disappoint for Cinco de Mayo and is partying all weekend. Beginning with a Cinco prefunk on Saturday, the Matador is extending your tequila needs to a party outside with a tent and outdoor bar accompanied by rockers the Ben Union band. Day of on Sunday DJ Midnight Mike will be returning to spin some dance tunes to shake your groove thang to in the outdoor tent. Drink specials are anticipated to include a beer and shot pairing deal and a Cinco margarita, yet to be announced. Their delectable menu that include tasty tacos and mondo orders of nachos will help keep the shenanigans at full speed and the fiesta on going until the wee-hours.

Grab the sombero and vamoose to the shindig near you in celebration of Mexican heritage and culinary delights or simply for the sake of a good party.
