In the Northwest, beer and coffee are staples of the average diet. If you're looking for a well-sized, yet still approachable beer fest, look no further than the 4th Annual Gig Harbor Beer Festival.

Each year, the Gig Harbor Beer Festival grows a bit. In its first year, only 11 brewers were on tap. That grew to 18 in its second year and 21 in its third. This year, the fest clocks in at 24 brewers as well as Gig Harbor-based Heritage Distillery.

"The event allows attendees to try a variety of microbrews they may not ever get the chance to drink, talk with brewers directly - and same for the brewers - they get to talk to beer enthusiasts directly, get feedback, likes/dislikes, and more," said John Fosberg, event organizer.

Brewers at this year's festival include hyperlocal establishments such as 7 Seas Brewing, which is based right in Gig Harbor; the Harmon and Wingman based in Tacoma; as well as many from wider Washington state. All brewers are from Washington state, making this festival an excellent way to get to know the local brew scene.

"We have six first-time brewers this year, which is the most we've had since the first year," added Fosberg. "Odd Otter is bringing some interesting brews."

Breweries new to the event are Wet Coast, Downpour, Odd Otter, Slaughter County, Top Rung and Elysian.

There will also be live entertainment to keep the afternoon hopping. Bands Sounds Like Dolores and local favorite Perry Acker are scheduled.

While there are no food vendors at the fest, it takes place in the Uptown Pavilion, which is home to several restaurants, including Blazing Onion, Panera and Fondi Pizzeria, as well as a few places you can grab sweet treats. All festival participants receive wristbands and can come and go from the festival area.

It's normal that tickets sell out due to the limited space available, so don't wait until the last minute to purchase yours. Gig Harbor Beer Festival will take place on May 9 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Gig Harbor Uptown Pavilion at 4701 Point Fosdick Dr NW.
