Everyone eats sandwiches. After all, it's hard to really screw up a sandwich, since it requires just enough skill to slap a couple of slices of meat and maybe a little cheese between two pieces of bread. But by the same token, it's also hard to elevate the sandwich into something truly extraordinary.
There are spots in the South Sound that manage, though, to create masterful creations that put those mediocre baloney-and-cheese-on-white-bread creations to shame.

The Weekly Volcano will launch its Tournament of Sandwiches March 21, sponsored by Subway. Much like our past food tournaments - Tacos 2010, Pizza 2011 and Breakfast 2012 - the Tournament of Sandwiches will follow the same logic as the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament - through a seeded bracket system, 64 area sandwiches will battle for sandwich supremacy.
Following the same pattern as last year's Tournament of Breakfast, the Weekly Volcano asked you, our beloved readers, to seed the tournament - meaning we polled you in February for the best sandwich in the South Sound to determine sandwich seedings and matchups in the knockout bracket.
Sixty-four South Sound sandwiches will compete in daily competitions on our blog Spew March 21-April 8.
Reader voting will pick daily winners until the Best Sandwich in the South Sound is crowned. It's just like March Madness, only with way more cheese.
The Tournament of Sandwiches grand champion will be announced at our Tournament of Sandwiches Party Monday, April 8 at Masa on Tacoma's Sixth Avenue.
