The to-do list when you PCS can be never-ending and as a result little things often fall through the cracks, like switching your magazine subscriptions...but what about the dog? In addition to finding a good doggy daycare or kennel, many breeds require steady grooming appointments.

The first step, like with anything in this day and age, is online research. Looking up rates, locations, customer reviews and more can really help narrow down the field of potential groomers poised to gain your business.

"Owners should always visit the establishment first before bringing their pet or making an appointment," advised Groomingdale's pet salon proprietor Deanna Clarke. "Be wary if they only allow visits during a certain time or on one day...you should be able to walk in during business hours and see how things are and how the animals are being treated."

When shopping new groomers you should also appraise if the facility is clean (for example, the floors have been swept and the aroma of wet dog isn't in the air) and see if you can personally speak with the staff member who will be working with your pet. Clear communication is important, as is a level of trust, when the person will be handling your beloved pet, so only being able to speak with a supervisor might lead to mistakes and a level of disconnect.

Clarke also suggests making an appointment with your current groomer before you pack up and hit the road. That way, if finding a new groomer takes awhile, your dog's health and appearance won't suffer, nor will you have to rush into a decision when researching the new groomers. Furthermore, Clarke is proactive for her clients and sends them on their way with some detailed records and instructions on how their dog was groomed, in order to help with a seamless transition.
