Farmers market season is upon us. Get ready for sunny days, warm weather and fresh, local fruits and vegetables. We're incredibly lucky to live in such a fertile area and have access to so many local farms and markets.  What better way to buy local and support small businesses than to buy the bulk of your groceries from them?

TACOMA

The Broadway Market

Tacoma's first and longest-running Farmers market is currently celebrating its 25th year.  This market offers just about everything from produce to ice cream and even has live cooking demonstrations and gardening classes. Feeling hungry?  Grab some lunch from one of the several hot food vendors and take a seat at the nearby tables. Luckily for those of us who rarely carry cash, this market takes debit and credit cards. Check the website for more information including a vendors list, parking information, what's in season and more.

Open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 29; corner of 9th and Broadway, Tacoma. Visit www.tacomafarmersmarket.com.

South Tacoma Market

This fun and vibrant Sunday market offers locally sourced food along with handcrafted items, but one of the biggest draws is that it's located right next to the STAR Center and has a great playground and spray park for your kids to enjoy. It also offers live entertainment, cooking classes and workshops.

Open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 27; 3873 S. 66th St. (STAR Center), Tacoma. Visit www.tacomafarmersmarket.com.

The Proctor Market

Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the Proctor Farmers Market strives to provide the community with fresh, locally-grown farm products. They are a farmer- and food-focused market (no craft goods here) and have more than 40 vendors offering everything from seafood to cider.

Open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Dec. 19; N. 27th and Proctor Street, Tacoma. Visit www.proctorfarmersmarket.com.

The Yelm Farmers Market

This market has been open since 2012 and is quickly becoming an integral part of the community. Its goal is to provide a place to become directly involved in local food and the farmers who grow it.  It has a great program called Power of Produce, which is free for kids ages 5 to 12. Children receive market tokens to spend on their choice of fruits or veggies.  Located next to Stewart's meats.
