Twelve years ago, Mario and Frances Lorenz imagined bringing a favorite pastime event from Galveston, Texas, with them to Washington where they relocated. They had enjoyed the Dickens Festival and all that it encompassed so much so, that Mario set out to seek sponsors for Tacoma's very own Dickens Festival. Now, the Tacoma-based festival has grown into a beloved event that families enjoy coming to, year after year.

This year, the festival's envisioned theme is centered around the circus tent and will take place Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the Stadium district. Guests will see and experience what a turn-of-the-century circus was like during this free event. Inside of the giant circus tent, guests will be entranced with the multiple variety acts performing including daring aerialists, stilt walkers, jugglers, and the sounds of live music. Guests at the Dickens Festival will have the pleasure of hearing the musical talents of the Stadium Jazz Band, Clay Martin Puppets, the Dickens Carolers of Seattle, and the Jason Lee Orchestra among many others.

The idea behind the Dickens Festival is to revive the Christmas Carol traditions as it is embodied in the lovable literature. The Dickens Festival would not be complete without encouraging guests of all ages to dress in Victorian-era costumes. "This is such a fun opportunity to get out and celebrate and enjoy the holiday festivities," said Kristi Nebel, event publicist. Guests with the best costume and best beard will have a chance to win one of the many various prizes in the costume contest. The festival also includes Sound Movement Arts Center Fashion Show and Dance Troup.

Bring your holiday spirit as you shop with specialty craft vendors as well as fun activities planned with King's Books and the Seymour Conservatory. Vendors will have items to purchase like beef jerky, homemade crafts, and there will be face painting available as well. Guests should make time to attend a special Victorian Holiday Celebration at Wright Park. Here, a Victorian-era Santa will be reading special children's stories for all to enjoy. After listening to a story read by Santa, be sure to catch a horse and carriage ride.

"This event brings people to the business district for shopping and shed a little light on the arts," said Mario Lorenz. The entire event is free of charge for guests thanks to the gracious donations by various groups in the Stadium and Hilltop Districts and the Hilltop Community Health Care. With over 35 sponsors, the Dickens Festival is not only quite the event but it is a vision that became a reality for both Mario and Frances. "We love how the Dickens Festival brings local artists together," said Lorenz. "It also brings so much holiday cheer to the public."

The entrance to the 12th Annual Dickens Festival will be located at Premier Collision: 111 North G St. in Tacoma. For more information, please visit: dickensfestival.net.
