Ahh, October.  It's the month of Pumpkin Spice lattes, sexy Donald Trump costumes and extended darkness.  And in that darkness, past the somewhat safe, flickering lights of leering Jack o' lanterns, lurks the unknown.  Ghosts, ghouls, the dead, the undead: These are just a sampling of the entities that will be introduced to scare-hungry masses this Halloween season.  Where can you best experience the spine-tingly good times of the season?  Here are five of the best local scares - collected by a highly official process of Ouija board manipulation.

Georgetown Morgue

Toward, but not fully in, Seattle, this haunted space brought to light by KUBE93 has a horrific backstory.  Nine former employees were basically barbecued to death when they were trapped in the crematorium chamber.  Who did it? Will it happen again when you visit the space? Are there more, bloodier secrets to be unearthed?   Discover for yourself Thursdays through Sundays in October. Prices for this fright fest range from $21 for general admission to $41 for the VIP speed line. 5000 E. Marginal Way, Seattle, 206.762.2067

The Chamber of Souls and The Playground

Collectively known as the Fright Fest at Wild Waves, here you can witness two different chambers of horror. In the Chamber of Souls, the restless souls of indentured monsters lurk around every corner and wait to show themselves.  In the Playground, prepare to shriek your way through the best and worst of your childhood fears in 3D. Admission ranges from $9.99 to $22.99. 36210 Enchanted Parkway South, Federal Way, 253.661.8000

The Paranormal Experience

This is not your average haunted house.  In point of fact, this is an actual for-real haunted ship, the USS Turner Joy, which is nestled snugly in Bremerton.  This destroyer-cum-naval museum hosts an annual haunted experience; it's true.  But this year, visitors can experience what happens when a paranormal investigation goes horribly wrong. Experiences are limited, and lines will be long.  Don't bother to bring kids under 7 - they won't be let in. Pre-order tickets at $10.50, or pay $12 at the door. Active-duty military are 50 percent off on Oct. 28.  Beach Ave., Bremerton, 360.792.2457

The Haunted Woods

Don't expect doors and typical walls here.  As the name may imply, the Haunted Woods at Maris Farms are, in point of fact, woods, and yeah, they are haunted.  Dentists? Well-dwellers? Probably. And this is along with the disorientation that happens as you travel through a cattle barn and corn fields on a foggy night before you get to the real sights and frights. 25001 Sumner Buckley Hwy., Buckley, 253.862.2848

My Morbid Mind

After the relative disquiet of the woods and a haunted naval ship, a "traditional" haunted house in Lacey might seem almost tame, right? Our Ouija board disagrees. Earth-borne individuals (who survived) agree and add quotes like, "super scary," and "don't, just don't, unless you're crazy."  (Yeah.  It's scary.) Depending on the day you go, expect operation between 7 to 11 p.m., and pay $10 to $12.  4548 Marvin Rd. SE.,  360.455.3330
