Retired Maj. Gen. John A. Hemphill passed away at his home in Steilacoom, WA on May 20, 2021.

A native of Boise, Idaho, he was a 1951 graduate of the United Stated Military Academy at West Point, New York. For the next 34 years he had a distinguished career. Upon retiring, he became an active, local community volunteer.

A member of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) since 1956, he served as the President of the Fort Lewis Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), the President of the AUSA Sixth Region (West Coast), and the Region's representative on the AUSA Council of Trustees.

While serving as the president of the local AUSA chapter, he championed the concept of 12 local AUSA subchapters.

He also led the effort to fund the creation of the Captain Meriwether Lewis Memorial Park at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

"God is good to me," he once said when asked why he worked so hard.

"It's simple.  You give back to the country that gave to you, that's how I see it."
